List of Facts

History: Iniciativa Comunitaria (IC). It is a community based organization that promotes health, education and prevention services to special populations that have been marginalized by traditional health systems. Founded in 1990 by Dr. José A. Vargas Vidot, this non-profit organization has provided assistance to drug users, sex workers, homeless individuals, young people exposed to street violence and people affected by HIV/AIDS.

Vision: To fight for a better quality of life, by providing harmony, health and happiness to marginalized individuals. Also, to reintegrate these individuals to society by giving them the special attention they need and deserve.

Mission: To promote concrete and effective changes in public policies that are geared towards empowerment and sustainable development for individuals that are marginalized from society.

Services: IC provides three areas of service: Department of Education and Prevention, Department of Direct Services and Department of Community Relations. All medical services offered are free of cost.

Recognition: IC has attended to more than 75,000 individuals in Puerto Rico during the past 17 years. The programs of Kamaria, Contigo Mujer, Centro para la Vida y Punto Fijo has pioneered in Puerto Rico by being innovative developers of risk-reduction models. As a result of its exemplary service, IC has received innumerable recognition from prestigious entities in Puerto Rico and the United States:
